Woodpeckers Drumming You Crazy?

Drumming noises? Holes in your wood siding? Woodpeckers pecking and damaging your house? These sounds and damage may well be due to woodpeckers.

Woodpecker damage
to wooden buildings may take one of several forms. Holes may be drilled into wood siding, eaves, window frames and trim boards.

Woodpeckers prefer cedar and redwood siding, but will damage pine, fir, cypress, and others when the choices are limited. Natural or stained wood surfaces are preferred over painted wood, and newer houses in an area are often primary targets.

Even though woodpeckers are classified as migratory, nongame birds and are protected by the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act, the Critter Control specialist can help to prevent the damage they cause with drumming on your home or business.

For those who have other bird nuisance problems, bird removal encompasses more than just relating troublesome birds in the area. It includes bird relocation, fixing damage to structures (such as repairing soffit) and preventing birds from returning. Relocating birds can be a challenge since they can quickly fly away. A bird removal specialist from the Critter Control will know how to remove certain types of birds. This may include moving their food sources and moving nests. A bird removal expert will also repair any damage and modify structures to prevent birds from entering in the future.

Through our use of ecologically responsible wildlife control services, with both residential and commercial wildlife control, Critter Control helps to solve a vast array of wildlife control problems for several animals. We offer wildlife control services including wildlife control, wildlife damage control, wildlife prevention control, and wildlife control management.

Why Is Pigeon Control Important?

It is important to identify pigeon problems and implement pigeon removal as soon as possible as the cleanup of pigeon droppings and associated damage repair tends to cause significant economic losses. It is also necessary to cleanup and repair pigeon damage on a regular basis in order to maintain safe environments for workers and safe home environments for your family.

Critter Control pigeon removal specialists can help exclude pigeons from buildings by sealing off their entry points into structures. This helps to reduce the amount of pigeon problems and the number of loafing or nesting sites, which in turn reduces the amount of pigeon damage.

If you need to get rid of pigeons, are in need of pigeon control, pigeon trapping and  pigeon removal services, please contact Critter Control today. Our Critter Control pigeon removal specialists have the resources necessary to implement effective programs for pigeon control.

Animal Smells and Dead Animal Odors

You’ve removed the offending wildlife from your  home, but it smells like they’re still there! There are many sources of dead animal odors found in the home. From droppings and urine, to decaying carcasses, or the body greases they’ve deposited in your  home, to the typical skunk spray complaint, our trained Wildlife Control Specialists at Critter Control can identify and get rid of smells in homes. We find most of our odor complaints to originate from under decks, crawl spaces, attics, wall voids, chimneys, bathroom vents and floor drains.

Let our IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification) specialists identify the source of your odor problem, remove it (if possible), clean affected surfaces and apply counteractants to eliminate the odor for good. Removal of the odor source is our first priority. If we can’t remove the source, we use aerosols, oxidizing agents, foggers and disinfectants with germicides to cover the smell, until nature completes this task for you. Ask your  Critter Control specialist which product will work for you, or let them handle the odor problem for you today.

  • Yellow-Headed Blackbird
  • Brown-Headed Blackbird

Common Grackles can be found throughout North America, usually east of the Rockies. They tend to build their nests in farmyards, marshes and shelterbelts. They have a strong bill, enabling them to eat acorns and other tree fruits throughout the winter; Common Grackles fly south to winter, often alongside other birds like cowbirds, starlings and redwings. Common Grackles are known as an iridescent blackbird with a long keel-shaped tail. Females are slightly smaller than the males and the males have more iridescence on the head and neck.

HOW TO IDENTIFY THE RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD

Red-Winged Blackbirds tend to build their nests in marshes, hayfields and ditches. You may find large flocks of Red-Winged Blackbirds feeding in fields, eating harmful insects like corn earworms and rootworm beetles. Similarly to the Common Grackle, these birds also fly south in the winter. Red-Winged Blackbirds have black bodies with patches of red and yellow feathers in the shoulder area. Males are slightly smaller than robins and females are smaller than males; females are brownish in color and resemble the sparrow.

It is common to find large flocks of Red-Winged Blackbirds congregating in marshes or woods during the night. Sometimes flocks include several million birds! However, these birds only have an annual survival rate of 50-60%.

GET RID OF BLACKBIRD PROBLEMS THROUGH EXCLUSION

Getting rid of blackbirds through exclusion methods is not usually a practical solution for blackbird control and blackbird removal. In small areas, netting methods can be implemented. Contact Critter Control today for help getting rid of blackbirds or setting up bird nets.

BLACKBIRD DAMAGE AND COMMON GRACKLE DAMAGE TO CROPS

Both the Common Grackle and Red-Winged Blackbird have been known to cause significant blackbird damage to crops. Common Grackles will eat the mature corn in fields, pulling kernels from the cob. They will also pull out sprouting corn. In addition to corn, Red-Winged Blackbirds can cause blackbird damage to other crops, such as oats, rice, sunflowers and sorghum. If you have a blackbird problem and need assistance with blackbird control to keep them away from your crops, contact a Critter Control blackbird removal professional today.

hOW TO KEEP BLACKBIRDS AWAY FROM CROPS

If you are in the agriculture industry, you may know how annoying blackbirds can be. Once you identity blackbirds as the nuisance here are a few tips to help prevent future blackbird problems:

  • Grow non-preferred crops near blackbird roosting areas so they will leave your other crops alone
  • Try not to plant rice too early
  • Harvest your crops, especially corn, as soon as possible to avoid blackbird invasion

WILL FRIGHTENING BLACKBIRDS KEEP THEM AWAY?

There are several devices that can be used for blackbird control and to keep blackbirds away from your home or crops. One in particular is the propane exploder.  It is important to use these devices properly in order to prevent harm to yourself, others or the birds themselves. Contact Critter Control for help with frightening blackbirds.

REPELLENTS AND TOXICANTS FOR BLACKBIRD REMOVAL

Blackbird Control Legal Status: Are Blackbirds Protected?

Blackbirds are federally protected by the United States under Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. They may only be killed when they are found “committing or about to commit depredations upon ornamental or shade trees, agricultural crops, livestock, or wildlife, or when concentrated in such numbers and manner as to constitute a health hazard or other nuisance,” as stated in federal laws regarding migratory birds (50 CFR 21). Additional blackbird killing restrictions will vary per state.

It’s a Magpie

Magpies are members of the corvid family, which also includes ravens, crows and jays. It is easy to identify magpies from other birds by their size and striking black and white color pattern. They have unusually long tails (at least half of their body length) and short, rounded wings. The feathers of the tail and wings are iridescent, reflecting a bronzy-green to purple. They have white bellies and shoulder patches and their wings flash white in flight. Like other corvids, they are very vocal, even boisterous. Typical calls include a whining ” maag ” and a series of loud, harsh “chuck” notes. Where magpies are not harassed, they can be extremely bold.

Seal Animal Entry Points in Homes

If you identify a chewed hole in a wall, a hole in attic, holes in soffit or cracks in foundation, it is important to first determine if the holes are animal related. YOU DO NOT WANT TO SEAL ANIMAL ENTRY POINTS IF THE ANIMALS ARE STILL INSIDE YOUR HOME. You can identify animal entry points by monitoring the areas with the holes and cracks for any animal activity, which may include squirrels, raccoon’s, birds, rodents and bats. If animals are the culprit, contact a Critter Control professional to assist with animal removal services.

Remember, even if the holes are very small, this does not mean that animals cannot fit through them. Some animals can squeeze their bodies through holes as small as the size of a quarter!  For the best repair of animal entry points including holes in walls, attics, soffits or foundation, contact Critter Control in your area.
